Carving pumpkins for Halloween is a tradition that the whole family can enjoy.  As a Christian mama, I was thrilled when I came across this pumpkin prayer while at a Trunk-or-Treat, hosted by one of our local churches last year.  The origin of the poem is unknown.  I love the meaningful lesson of God’s love in our lives and am excited to implement the pumpkin prayer into our pumpkin carving tradition.

The Pumpkin Prayer

Dear God,

As I carve my pumpkin, help me say this prayer:

Open my mind so I can learn about You.

(Cut off the top of the pumpkin)

God wants to work within each of us.  When we open our minds to His love, we allow Him to work through us.

Take away all of my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do.

(Clean out the inside)

He is an ever-loving God.  When you take away the seeds of sin, such as anger, jealousy, and greed, you can see how He cleanses our minds and bodies and renews our spirit.  If we confess our sins to Him and obey His commands, He will forgive us and be with us always.

Open my eyes so Your love I will see.

(Cut out two eyes)

The Lord’s presence is all around us.  We must first open our hearts in order to see His magnificent presence in our lives.

I’m sorry for turning up my nose to all You’ve given me.

(Cut out a nose)

When we turn up our nose to something, it means that we do not like it.  Instead of complaining about what we have, or don’t have, we must be thankful for all that He has given us.  “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).  We truly have all that we really need within us.

Open my ears so Your word I will hear.

(Cut out two ears)

The Bible teaches us about God’s love for us.  Just like we must listen and obey our parents, we must listen and obey God by living according to His word.  If we look to Him in faith, He will lead us to understanding.

Open my mouth so I can tell others You are near.

(Cut out a mouth)

The Lord has blessed each of us with many gifts.  He wants us to pass on those blessings, by sharing the good news about His kindness and unshakeable love.

Let Your light shine in all that I say and do!

(Place a candle inside the pumpkin and light it)

Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16).  The candle represents the light of the Lord who lives in all of us.  It’s important to live in such a way that those who know you but do not know God, will come to know Him because of you.

Amen

Trick or treat bookmarks

You can also print off these pumpkin prayer bookmarks to hand out in your classroom or to trick-or-treaters.  Attach them to a bag of pumpkin carving tools and gift them to family, friends, or neighbors to help them shine with love for Jesus.

If you’re looking for some books to go along with your pumpkin carving traditions, these books are household favorites.

A Pumpkin Prayer

The Pumpkin Patch Parable

Don’t forget your pumpkin carving tools.  This set is so much nicer than the plastic ones we’ve been using.  We also like using battery-operated candles.  They are much safer with little ones and pets.  And I don’t have to worry if I forget to turn them off overnight.

Keep shining your light for Jesus.

Love & Blessings,

Meg
